Sustainability Assessment of Solid Biofuels from Agro-Industrial Residues Case of Sugarcane Bagasse in a Mexican Sugar Mill

Motivated by the environmentally driven energy transition we live in, valorization of biomass residues from agro-industry as renewable can play an essential role in GHG emissions mitigation. To overcome debate on production and use solid biofuels (SBF), this study, apply integrated multicriteria tool for assessment sustainability agro-industrial (AIR) biofuels. Mexico has a vast AIR production, but frequently, are considered waste biomass. Still, when valorized, SBF do not have adverse effects soil quality, responsible biodiversity loss, compete against food first-generation SBF. Nevertheless, present other environmental, social, economic impacts that been adequately evaluated; therefore, identified need systems based SBF–AIR input fuels. After reviewing previous work methodologies, decision analysis methods, indicator weighting it appropriate problem to integrates entropic method into discrete called PROMETHEE. In terms selected indicators, was used assess four electric supply Mexican sugar mill case study: current bagasse cogeneration, efficient power generation system fueled only with fuel oil, grid electricity only. Finally, after evaluating mentioned indicators: emissions, PM employments per unit (JOBS), net value (NPV) each alternative, found outranking flow (EBS). which is most sustainable because highest alternatives, since lower reducing 55% 58%. The EBS also shows NPV due surplus sales, resulting profitable analyzed.
